Structure Query Language (SQL) server from Microsoft and server process is multi-thread server architecture with its own kernel and an integrated SQL control monitor. Essentially a database operating system running seamlessly on top of the machine's native operating system. The SQL server does its own scheduling, task switching, disk etching, and locking.

The product can only run by the 32-bit processors. Microsoft's SQL server and its server are based on the server technology. Microsoft server is design for micro-based LAN's.

The SQL server virtual server architecture takes advantages of all processors on the multiprocessor machine. To optimize the performance, it uses a cost-based query optimizer, cluster indexing, share commits, a share procedure cache, integrate networking, multi-volume tables, physical image lagging, and optimize bulk data transfer.

Page-level locking and browse mode locking permit users to browse through rows one at a time and update values in one row at a time, without locking the entire dataset. Time stamping is used to detect rows that have been modified since retrieval.

SQL server uses the name of pipe mechanism and it is automatically identify by the network as a LAN manager service, which means it can to bring up and down remotely by LAN manager. Because SQL server adheres to industry standards, it can run on any network that supports OS/2, LAN manager, and named it as pipes.

Two types of distributed capabilities are provides as:
1. Distributed access, a central SQL server supports applications running on different machines.
2. Distributed data, the data resides on different machines in a network. Multiple servers might be accessed to provide data to the same transaction.

Transact-SQL, a set of extensions to ANSI-standard SQL, is used to write store the procedures, which are compiled and stored in the data dictionary. Online maintenance is handling by storage procedure, which are written in transact-SQL and handled as concurrent by the transaction.

The product has built-in security features that allow systems administrators, data base owners or owners of data base objects to grant or deny access to specified users or group of users. Data can be secured at the table, view, column, command or stored procedure level. SQL server can quickly and accurately recover from system failures due to power outages or a network crash.

The product uses a write-ahead transaction log-transactions are returned to log before the database page is written so changes can be rerun. It logs only the offset position and stream process rather than the logical record. In addition, using the system load and user-supplied maximum recovery times, SQL server can calculate an appropriate check point interval. At each point, it can write all the pages that have been changed to discuss backup.

This server/cluster Fault Tolerant version provides fault tolerant in cluster CPU environment. The cluster fault tolerant server is configured on a second central processing unit in the cluster but does not routinely use the resources of that central processing unit.
